Compiling CVS Jack with ALSA support

Michael Rudmin
Hi,

I've been trying to get my sound working, including
MIDI et al.

I've installed Debian DeMuDi, with the 2.6.12
multimedia kernel (ALSA included).

With alsaconf, I've set up to use my SB16 instead of
my ensoniq chipset.

With lsmod | grep snd I can confirm that ALSA is
running.

However, when I tried to start up qjackctl, I'd get
a message "ALSA: cannot set period to xx frames for
playback".  Looking on the web, everyone seems to be
having this problem, so I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling JACK, in case it was a configuration
problem with an old kernel.  Nope.

So then I figured I'd uninstall JACK, and download
the CVS version, and compile it into place.  I used
the method listed at

http://esaracco.free.fr/documentations/linuxaudio/linuxaudio/building-required-audio-softwares.html#build-jack-audio-connection-kit

# mkdir /mnt/ramfs
# echo "none /mnt/ramfs tmpfs defaults 0 0" >>
/etc/fstab
# mount /mnt/ramfs

However, when I tried to ./configure it with the flags

--prefix=/usr  --enable-posix-shm
--with-default-tempdir=/mnt/ramfs

(and when I also tried, just in case --with-ALSA)

I got back that Jackd was going to be installed with
ALSA off, OSS on.  I need ALSA on and default, and OSS
possibly on... but definitely ALSA on.

Now, it seems that JACK is somehow failing to detect
or interface with ALSA, but why?  And what do I need
to do to get this running?

  - Mike

you probably do not have the development packages for ALSA installed.

its a little infuriating, but now rather standard for most distros: they
split software libraries into two packages, one containing what you need
to run programs that use the library, the other containing what you need
to compile programs that use the library.

i am not sure what the development package will be called for your
system, but someone will say something if you can't find it. i imagine
that apt-get search alsa might be a useful command.

So just increase or decrease "Frames/Period" in the Setup screen until
you find a setting that works.
