USB Audio 1.0 support using libusb?

Nicholas J Humfrey
Hello,

Has anyone looked at adding a device driver to jackd for USB Audio 1.0
directly using libusb?

I guess it would be quite a lot of work, when ALSA/CoreAudio already
does a good job, but it would be interesting to cut out the middleman...

I'm not a specialist but I bought an Audiophile USB device because I
thought it was supported by ALSA usb module, and eventually find out
that it wasn't the case: especially because most vendors implements only
part of the specification and add non standard functions (initialization
method,  ...). It took me one month without help from M-AUDIO to figure
out how the device should be intialized and develop the appropriate fix.

Alsa snd_usb module has a lot of quirks for USB devices (and all are not
covered yet)...

So yes I think this will be a lot of work... indeed  ;-)

My 2 cents
Thibault

Hm, yes. Thanks for your comments. I have know a couple of USB Audio
devices with standards issues.

It wouldn't seem worth the effort adding USB support to Jack and then
duplicating the quirks tracking... unless there was a desirable OS
that could support Jack and libusb, but didn't have good native support.
