new release imminent, issues ...

Paul Davis
I would like to do a new release of JACK very soon. This raises two
important issues:

        1) TESTING

We need more reports on the code in SVN from more systems.
Do your part! Compile, test, send a brief email to the
list saying "It works" or "Its broken".

        2) Rui's OMNIBUS PATCH

As a result of some discussions at LAC, Rui came up with
a fairly substantial set of changes that unify command
line arguments across many different backends. The goal
is to make qjackctl be usable for both Linux and OS X,
as well to offer a reduced form factor version of qjackctl's
GUI. This is a chicken and egg situation - we can't
release the new JACK till qjackctl is released to handle
the new parameters, and Rui can't release qjackctl with
the new parameters till JACK is available to use them.

          Suggestions?

        3) Freebob

Waiting longer for a JACK release is now holding up
the initial "binary" release of Freebob. We don't
want to do that - Freebob is perhaps one of the most
important projects in all of Linux audio right now.

LGTrader
Building it now Paul.

What the status of things like mmx/sse support on AMD64 platforms?
IIRC that was not available earlier. Has anything changed about Jack,
Ardour or LADSPA?

Thanks,
Mark

It's broken. ;-)

Probably not the version of portaudio you are expecting, or something like that.

Correct.  The PortAudio driver never has supported V19, which is
*still* not officially released.  It was mainly done for Mac systems,
before the CoreAudio driver was written.  V19 did not run on Mac
at that time.  (Does it yet?)

The driver only works against portaudio-0.18.  I didn't know they'd even had a 0.19 release.  I thought it was still languishing in CVS.  They've made a lot of API changes in 0.19.

OK - so I was just going incrementally. I tried

./configure --prefix=/usr

and got the earlier reported errors. Trying again with

./configure --disable-portaudio --prefix=/usr

seems to have built correctly.

Should portaudio possibly be disabled by default and then enabled by
those who can make it work? Or is is this somehow an AMD64 issue?

OK - so when this emerge of KDE finishes I'll removed Jack from
portage and try out this new one. Most likely this evening sometime.

Thanks for the help Jack.

cheers,
Mark

Better to figure out how to detect V18, but not V19 in configure.ac.
Disabling it by default probably wouldn't hurt much at this point,
however.  I doubt many people are using it any more.

I did not want to replace my installed jack, so I tried the following:

svn co http://subversion.jackaudio.org/jack/trunk/jack
cd jack
./autogen
./configure --prefix=`pwd`
make

So far so good.
But when I try to run "bin/jackd -d alsa", I get the following message:

"
could not find any drivers in /home/kjetil/brenn/jack/lib/jack!

jackd: no drivers found; exiting
"

But its all there, "ls -la /home/kjetil/brenn/jack/lib/jack/" shows:
"May 30 15:16 jack_alsa"

Playing with LD_CONFIG_PATH and LD_PRELOAD does not help.

Running ldconfig does not help either.

And "ldd -r bin/jackd" shows :
"libjack.0 => /home/kjetil/brenn/jack/lib/libjack.0"

So it should work.
Any ideas?

Hi,
The KDE build finished so I removed the portage supplied version of
Jack and installed the new SVN version. Nothing but Aqualung tested
but it does work. no xruns or anything out of the ordinary. I'm
running 64/2 on the HDSP 9652.

I sent, 2 days ago, a "It's broken" report for Fedora Core 5 in my last post
("SVN jackd segfaults on Fedora Core 5").

I'm not sure this post was distributed since I didn't received it though my
"Receive posts you send to the list?" option is set to yes (However the mail
was archived on sourceforge.)

In case nobody received it, I'll repost it.

QjackCtl CVS HEAD [qjackctl 0.2.20.11] is hopefully aligned to this. As
suggested from my patch, the coreaudio command-line device-name/id
parameter option has been changed from -n to -d.

The intended changes to the QjackCtl/Setup dialog, as I think is what Paul
mentions as "reduced form factor" and IIRC its about splitting the
Setup/Settings tab into some "Novice" and "Advanced" sub-tabs, is not in
place yet. Only those main-window form reduction options are ready and
available i.e. hiding the main-window display buttons.

Another topic which still missing on current QjackCtl CVS deals about the
additional/convenience MacOSX-only options, like number-of-virtual-ports,
which will be reserved to yet another specialized "Advanced" sub-tab, or
so I believe. Stéphane?

Cheers.

Yes, what is needed:

- number-of-virtual- input ports, - number-of-virtual- output ports,

- auto connect with physical ports (checkbox)

- Default input (checkbox), default output (checkbox)

It works!  :-)

I ran the alsa backend overnight with jamin and h2.  Got some xruns,
but I blame the bcm43xx wireless driver for them.

This is my new Ubuntu Dapper laptop.  Binary compatibility is fine
with everything I've tried (after symlinking the versioned libjack .so
name to match the Debian convention.

Since I had segfaults before doing that, I recommend incrementing
the JACK_PROTOCOL_VERSION number, even if we're not certain it is
required.

Let's do it.

I can build freebob, but not run it.  I believe this is mainly
due to problems in my 1394 library versions.  I'll work on that
some more.

There is some configure.ac problem that I have not solved, yet.
When libfreebob is missing it works fine.  When there is a broken
version and I need to configure with --disable-freebob, it also
disables the ALSA backend.  I don't see where that could happen,
but it is *not* good.

3dnow is only found on athlon processors... I guess the configure script should be detecting this (or you should at least have a configure option to specify which optimization you want).

I would consider this a bug.

I'd appreciate Jussi's comments on this, since he wrote both the code
and the configure.ac stuff that does the detection.

There was no enable optimize on his command line, I think the question is would it compile with --disable-optimize

I agree.  It works without --enable-optimize?
